The Guardian of Cusco
Ausangate is the most important Apu in the southern Andes. This route not only takes you through its glacial slopes and colored lagoons but also connects epically with the Rainbow Mountain, away from conventional crowds.
Route Analysis
CUSCO – TINKI – PACCHANTA – UPIS
Travel through the South Valley to Upis. Gentle acclimatization hike with views of Mt. Ausangate. Exploration of Huayna Ausangate lagoon.
UPIS – JAMPA PASS (5100M) – AUSANGATECOCHA
Crossing Jampa Pass surrounded by glaciers and turquoise lagoons. Descent to the Ausangatecocha camp.
AUSANGATECOCHA – WARMISAYANA PASS (5200M) – ANANTAPATA
Ascent to the highest point of the journey (Palomani/Warmisayana Pass). Panoramic views of the Vilcanota Range and the red mountain.
ANANTAPATA – RAINBOW MOUNTAIN – CUSCO
Early visit to Vinicunca to avoid crowds. Red Valley viewpoint and transfer back to Cusco city.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: This is a demanding hike. Camps are above 4,300m and nights are very cold. It is essential to have been in Cusco for at least 2 days prior.
